Introduction

Since the emergence of mankind on the mother earth, the humans had been engaged in establishing such a social fabric of the society which aim at foraging diversification and creating collective conscience. However, this utopia has been time and again thwarted by chaos and anarchy but the french revolution of 1789 alongwith two world wars, a cold war and recent fight against millitancy, paved a way to diversified social problems for which social scientists came forward to adress the social pathologies and sociologists joined hands in such a pursuit. One such manifestation is the commencement of MSc Sociology Program in Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad.

The Department of Sociology was established in 2011 under the umbrella of Anthropology, Faculty of Social Sciences at QAU. The Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Masoom Yasinzai and Prof. Dr. Hafeez ur Rehman, the Chairman Department of Anthropology took special interest in establishing this department.

The Sociology Department has established a unique identity because of its focus on contemporary social and cross-cultural issues along with solid training in statistics, theory, and the subfields of the disciplines. The department’s cross-cultural focus and emphasis on social concerns help to prepare students for cross-cultural and domestic vocations in education, social service, teaching and social welfare missions.

The graduates over here are concerned with understanding the human condition, past and present, and equipped with the skills of developing rapport in unfamiliar situations, collecting and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data, thinking analytically at the macro and micro levels, and communicating effectively, both orally and in writing. All of these skills are highly relevant to the multicultural and global world. Sociology students in the program are well-prepared for further academic study, and/or for pursuing careers in social services, criminal justice, education, research, health fields, social and corporate marketing, business consulting, policy analysis, program and projects evaluation, community participation and international development.

In the present circumstances where the social fabric is hampered, the members of the society are highly disillusioned while the youth is completely disoriented; it is required that the various institutions must come up to contribute to the best of their capabilities/capacities. It is with this vision of reorienting the youth, strengthening their academic foundations and enhancing their research skills, that the Sociology Department is established in Quaid-i-Azam University, one of the leading Public Sector Federal University that caters to the needs of the people belonging to all the provinces and various social classes.
