The Department of Physics is a teaching/research department of the Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU), Islamabad. It offers courses leading to M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees. Thanks to heavy material and financial inputs from agencies such as Japanese Aid Program (Japan), DAAD Program (Germany), ICAC Scheme of Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ASICTP), Trieste (Italy), International Program in the Physical Sciences (IPPS) Uppsala (Sweden), Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF), Higher Education Commission (HEC) and other National Research Organizations.

The Department in the recent years has launched a strong experimental research program in a number of areas of physics. The Department lays stress on colloquia and seminars in which, apart from the faculty, participation from the research students is encouraged. Scientists and experts from various organizations and institutions outside the university are also invited. The faculty members and research students get opportunities to attend the National and International conferences. In addition the Department itself has organized quite a few National conferences and Regional Workshops.
The Department enjoys research collaboration with National Research organizations. The Department has also established international collaborations with the reputed institutions such as MIT (USA), University of Virginia (USA), Imperial College (UK), Bonn University, Bochum University and Berlin University (Germany).
Pakistan Council for Science and Technology has recently compiled a data for the working scientists in the country based on the Cumulative Impact Factor of the research papers published in the international journals and the department of Physics has been recognized as one of the best institution in the country. Among the Universities in the country the Physics department at QAU possesses the highest C.I.F.
The members of the faculty are highly qualified with long experience of teaching and research in their respective fields of specialization.
