The Department of Economics was the first department of the Faculty of Social Sciences established in the year 1967. Initially, it started its M.Sc. Degree program, which is being run successfully over the years. In 1978-79, it embarked upon its M.Phil. Programme, which had soon to be suspended due to the shortage of teachers. The Department launched its Ph.D. Programme in 1987 and also resumed the teaching of M.Phil. Programme. In response to the increasing demand for more M.Sc. admissions, it also started the M.Sc. Evening Programme on self-finance basis in Fall 1994.

At present, admissions are offered every year in all the four programmes on a regular basis. The Department has remained relentlessly committed not to compromise on high standards of teaching. Its superiority lies in following the latest techniques of instructions based on recent literature. Individual and collective faculty research has equal precedence with teaching in the Department. High quality research work has been done during the past year. Besides, the teachers have participated in different local as well as international seminars and conferences.
