Department of Biology

The Department of Biological Sciences was established in 1972. It is a teaching and research department of the University and provides facilities in a number of contemporary disciplines of biology at M.Sc., M.Phil and Ph.D levels.
A very well-stocked Herbarium is housed in the Department with a rich collection of plants from different parts of Pakistan including some rare plants and many holotypes.

The graduates from this Department besides being absorbed in teaching profession are being employed by various research organizations. Because of the relevance of some of the research programs, interaction and collaboration with other institutions has been achieved within the country and abroad. The inland collaborating institutions include Pakistan Agriculture Research Council, National Institute of Health, Nuclear Institute of Agriculture and Biology, National Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, WWF and IUCN.
The Department is well equipped with modern research facilities. The major equipments present are Electron Microscope, IR and UV visible spectrophotometers, Atomic Absorption Spectrophometer, HPLC, Automated DNA sequencer, PCR Machines, Fermenters Phytotrons etc. It is one of the largest centres for research in Biological Sciences among all the Universities in Pakistan. Many individual research projects have been receiving funding from Higher Education Commission, Pakistan Sciences Foundation, Pakistan Agricultural Research Council, IUCN, WWF, ISESCO, DFG/GTZ, AWP.
