| M.Sc.
|
It is a two-year (4-semester) degree course. Five
courses, each of three credits, is taken by the
students in each semester. In the fourth semester
a choice between pure and applied mathematics
is offered. Passing marks are 50% and merit is
determined on the basis of grade point average.

| M.SC.
(MATHEMATICS) SYLLABII |

A total of 60 credit hours of course work is required
for an M.Sc. in Mathematics. All courses carry
3 credit hours. As such, 13 compulsory courses
and at least 7 optional courses are required to
be taken.

M Phil. |
It is a two-year (4-semester) course after M.Sc.
In the first year, one studies eight courses,
four in each semester. In the third semester
a supervisor is appointed by a departmental
committee. A Junior Research Assistant (JRA)
is expected to produce a dissertation on a topic
assigned by the supervisor and approved by the
Advanced Studies and Research Board. At the
end of the fourth semester, a JRA is required
to defend publicly his/her dissertation in the
presence of his/her supervisor, an external
examiner, and the Chairman. Passing marks are
50% and merit is determined on the basis of
grade point average.

Ph.D. |
A
Senior Research Assistant (SRA) is required
to work under the supervision of a faculty member
who is at least a Ph.D. He/she is required to
produce a thesis on a topic assigned by the
supervisor and approved by the Advanced Studies
and Research Board. The SRA is required to pass
comprehensive examination in two attempts at
the most. The thesis is sent abroad and at least
two positive evaluation reports must be received
for the SRA to qualify for the public defense
of the thesis in the presence of two external
examiners, his supervisor and the chairman.

Admission
policy including eligibility criteria

(a) M.Sc.
|
|
M.Sc.
admission is offered twice a year. Forty regular
and 10 SelfFinance students are admitted in the
spring semester. Forty seats on purely self finance
basis are advertised for the fall semester. The
students have to complete 60 credit hours courses
in a maximum of six semesters.

(b) M.Phil.
|
Admission
to M.Phil. class is made twice a year. On the
average about 17 students are admitted each
year.
|

(c) Ph.D. level
|
|
Presently there are 40 Ph.D. students in the Department.
